From Side Hustle to Full-Time Success: How Mentorship Transformed Amy’s Remote Online Notary Business

At Notary SWFL, we love sharing the real stories of notaries who take the leap into Remote Online Notarization (RON) — and find life-changing results. Today, we’re highlighting Amy, one of Katie Tremulis’ mentees, who turned her side hustle into a thriving business that now surpasses her former corporate income.

Amy’s Notary Journey

Amy began her notary career at the end of 2023, juggling both in-person and remote work. Like many notaries, she initially treated it as a side hustle. But she quickly realized that remote online notarization was her true passion — offering her the chance to meet clients around the world, speed up closings, and create more impact.

In May of this year, Amy was unexpectedly laid off from her corporate job. Instead of panicking, she leaned into mentorship with Katie Tremulis, founder of Roadmap to RON. Within just a few months, Amy’s RON income reached 75% of her corporate paycheck, then 100% by June, and by July she had surpassed it entirely. Her notary business now provides 110% of what she used to earn — all through remote work.

The Power of Mentorship

When asked about mentorship, Amy doesn’t hesitate: it was the catalyst that allowed her to scale quickly and confidently. She highlights two game-changers she learned early on:

  • Diversify beyond loan signings — loan signing work fluctuates with the real estate market. To build a stable business, notaries need to think broader.

  • Educate your clients — most people don’t fully understand how RON works. By confidently explaining the process and benefits, Amy positioned herself as the go-to resource.

Katie also emphasized tracking numbers. Amy diligently monitored her income percentages, direct client work, and signing volume. This gave her a clear picture of growth and helped her set realistic, income-driven goals.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Amy shared some of her biggest takeaways for other notaries:

  • Track KPIs from the start — income, client sources, and average signing fees help you measure progress.

  • Reinvest in your business — instead of lifestyle creep, put money back into marketing, education, and systems.

  • Avoid burnout — while it’s possible to do 10+ RON sessions in a day, it’s not sustainable. Balance is key.

  • Leverage unique skills — being bilingual (Amy speaks Mandarin) opened entirely new markets and made her invaluable to signing services and clients alike.

As Katie noted, bilingual skills are often underutilized. Highlighting them can set you apart in a crowded market and attract direct clients.

Amy’s Advice for New Notaries

Her message is simple: “Don’t limit yourself to just one type of signing — and don’t assume everyone understands what a remote online notary does. Lead with education, consistency, and the skills that make you unique.”

Why Mentorship Matters

Amy’s journey shows that mentorship accelerates growth. Instead of navigating alone, she was able to avoid costly mistakes, implement proven strategies, and transition into full-time RON faster than she thought possible.

At Notary SWFL and through Roadmap to RON, Katie Tremulis continues to guide notaries who are ready to scale — showing them how to build sustainable businesses that create freedom and impact.

Final Thoughts

Remote Online Notarization is still a wide-open opportunity. As Amy says, “It’s a blue ocean.” For those willing to learn, adapt, and invest in themselves, the potential is limitless.
