How to Become a Remote Online Notary in Colorado

Starting December 31, 2020, Colorado Notaries can register to perform remote online notarizations (RONs). If you want to become a CO remote Notary, follow this step-by-step guide to get started, meet state requirements, and grow your notary business.

Why Become a Remote Notary in Colorado?

Becoming a remote online Notary allows you to notarize documents online, offering flexibility, convenience, and the ability to serve clients anywhere in the U.S., as long as you are physically in Colorado. With RON, you can expand your notary business, attract more clients, and even make it a full-time side hustle.

Step 1: Hold a Traditional Colorado Notary Commission

Before you can perform RONs, you must first hold an existing traditional Notary Public commission in Colorado. Requirements include:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be a citizen or permanent legal resident (or lawfully present in the U.S.)

  • Be a resident of Colorado or have a place of employment in the state

  • Be able to read and write English

  • Have no recent felony, dishonest misdemeanor, or revoked commissions in the past five years

For full details, visit the Colorado Secretary of State – Notary Public Requirements.

Step 2: Complete RON Training & Exam

Colorado requires RON applicants to:

  1. Complete a state-approved RON training course

  2. Pass the exam

These steps ensure you understand how to conduct remote notarizations according to Colorado law.

Step 3: Contract With a RON Technology Provider

You must choose a technology provider approved by the Colorado Secretary of State. Approved providers include:

  • Black Knight Origination Technologies

  • BlueNotary

  • Clear Sign

  • Cyberize It

  • Digital Delivery

  • Epic River Healthcare

  • LiveNotary

You’ll also need RON supplies, including:

  • Electronic journal

  • Electronic seal

  • Digital certificate containing your signature

All supplies must be compatible with your chosen RON provider.

Step 4: Submit Your RON Application

Log into your Notary account on the Colorado Secretary of State website and submit:

  • Completed application form

  • Proof of training and exam completion

  • Payment of required fees

After submission, your RON authorization will be processed alongside your traditional commission.

Step 5: How RON Works in Colorado

Once approved, you can perform remote notarizations online. The process includes:

  1. Identity Verification

    • Personal knowledge

    • Oath or affirmation of a credible witness

    • Remote presentation of a government-issued ID and credential analysis

  2. Signer Awareness

    • Confirm the signer is aware and willing to sign

  3. Electronic Signature

    • Signer signs digitally

    • Notary applies electronic seal and digital certificate

  4. Recording

    • Record audio-video session

    • Save journal entry

Note: Both Notary and signer must remain connected for the entire session. If the connection is interrupted, the process must restart.

Step 6: What Notarial Acts Can Be Done Remotely?

Colorado RON Notaries can perform:

  • Acknowledgments

  • Verifications on oath or affirmation

  • Witnessing signatures
