How to Become a Traditional In-Person Notary in Florida: A Comprehensive Guide

Welcome! My name is Katie, a remote online notary in the State of Florida, and today I’m excited to walk you through the steps to become a traditional in-person notary. This is the first essential step if you aspire to become a remote online notary. Let’s dive right in!

Introduction to Notary Public

A notary public is a public official appointed by the state government to serve as an impartial witness in performing various official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents. These acts are also known as notarizations or notarial acts.

I have been a notary for over 11 years, starting as a traditional notary and transitioning to a remote online notary two years ago. Becoming a notary has been life-changing for me, providing countless opportunities. I often refer to my notary stamp as my safety blanket because it’s something I can always rely on.

Steps to Become a Traditional In-Person Notary in Florida

  1. Notary Education Course

    • Importance: The first step is to take a notary education course. This is crucial as our work involves a high level of integrity and knowledge.

    • Options: There is a free state-approved notary education course that covers all the basics you need to know. I recommend this free course, allowing you to save money for other necessary expenses such as loan signing courses, errors and omission insurance, and background checks.

  2. Completing the Application Process

    • Third-Party Vendor: You will need to go through a state-approved third-party vendor to process all required documents. These vendors will guide you through the application process, including obtaining the necessary bonds and notary seal.

    • Costs: The state fee is a fixed $39, but you will also need to budget for the bond premium and notary seal. Make sure to shop around for the best deals.

  3. Receiving Certification and Bond

    • Certification: Once your application is approved, you will receive your certification and notary bond by mail. Save your certification on your computer for easy access and mark the expiration date to ensure timely renewal.

Managing Your Notary Career

  • Record Keeping: Keep all your notary-related documents and certifications in one folder for easy access. This includes a screenshot of your notary search results showing your valid commission.

  • Renewal: Mark your renewal dates and renew your notary commission early to avoid any disruptions in your business.

Initial Costs and Equipment

  • Estimated Costs: The initial setup cost for becoming a notary, including equipment for loan signings, is around $1,000. This includes a dual-tray printer and scanner, which are essential for handling sensitive documents securely.

  • Supply List: I have included a printable supply list for in-person notaries. This list includes the most common printers, scanners, and other equipment used by notaries.

Additional Resources and Income Opportunities

  1. Continuing Education: Take your education seriously. There are numerous continuing education classes available through various channels, including my notary community.

  2. Community Support: Join notary communities on Facebook or other platforms. Networking with other notaries can provide valuable insights and support.

  3. Income Sources:

    • Loan Signing Agent: This is one of the most lucrative notarization opportunities. However, it requires handling large document packets and has a steeper learning curve.

    • General Notary Work: Diversify your income by offering general notary services. This can include notarizing parental consent forms, divorce documents, and more. My top three industries to work with are title companies, law firms, and construction companies.

    • Signing Services: These act as intermediaries between you and the title companies, providing additional job opportunities.

Marketing Your Notary Business

Marketing is crucial for the success of your notary business. Here are some tips:

  • Google My Business: Set up a profile to attract individual clients.

  • Business Cards: Use Canva to create professional business cards.

  • Networking: Attend community events, workshops, and conferences to promote your services.

Conclusion

We helped a family member purchase a home out of state. This was a super stressful process, as all of us were in another state than the house that was being purchased. Katie helped out in a pinch with her virtual notarization services. Most importantly, using her virtual service meant not having to take time off work to go to a local notary and wait around. She made the process easy and had everything prepped. Highly recommend!
